Conventional & Functional Approaches to Psoriasis

Psoriasis is an inflammatory auto-immune skin condition which presents with itchy, red skin which is sore and can sometimes crack and bleed. It is characterised by skin cells which multiply much faster than normal creating an overabundance of red plaques covered with white scales.

Areas commonly affected are the elbows, knees, scalp, torso and hands. Psoriasis can also affect the joints with a percentage of patients experiencing psoriasis arthritis.

In considering the functional medicine approach to treating psoriasis we would address the factors which affect the immune response in the skin which will help alleviate the condition. Addressing factors such nutrient deficiency, liver and bowel function and food sensitivity will help to identify the root cause and triggers of the condition.
